What do the different errors and warnings mean?
Marvin attempts to correctly place shots, even those with warnings, but these versions require extra scrutiny, as they may not cut in as expected.
error/warning | issue |
red version names | Duplicate version names were detected. Check whether you imported the same QT twice or if a vendor forgot to version up between submissions. |
vertical line next to shot ids | Multiple versions of the same shot id were detected. When you export an EDL, each version will appear in separate files because they occupy the same record timecode and must be cut in on different video tracks. |
red shot id |
A matching subcap was not found. Check that your naming conventions settings are correct and that the filename includes the proper shot id. It may also indicate that a shot was added or omitted but your subcaps are outdated. |
red exclamation point between source timecodes |
An unusually short version was detected. Check whether it was a render error or something like a lighting ref that was not intended to be cut in. Marvin determines that a version is "unusually short" if it is less frames than two times the user preference handles + 2. Hovering over the icon displays the total number of delivered frames. |
red comment |
A short or unusually short version was detected. The comments "short 23x" and "unusually short 23x" indicate that the source is shorter than the cut by 23 frames. Check if there was a render error or if the length of the cut changed, which may mean that your subcaps are outdated. |
yellow comment |
An unbalanced version was detected. The comment "unbalanced" indicates that there are enough frames to cover the cut, but that the source's remaining tail length does not equal the handle length. A positive value "unbalanced 10x" means that the tail handle has an extra 10 frames, and a negative value "unbalanced -10x" means that the tail handle is short of the expected length by 10 frames. This could mean that the shot slipped, the cut changed, the vendor supplied extra handles, a respeed needs to be reapplied, or that it's a reuse that may require additional attention. |
red record timecodes |
A matching subcap was not found. Check that your naming conventions settings are correct and that the filename includes the proper shot id. It may also indicate that a shot was added or omitted but your subcaps are outdated. |
Why do I get errors when importing clips and subcaps?
Make sure you selected the correct TXT files in the submissions import window. Avid's TXT clip and subcap files are different formats and are not interchangeable.
If the problem persists, send the files and corresponding Avid bins to Doom Support for further testing.
Why do all the fields have question marks upon import?
If the imported submissions are either empty or only display question marks, then there was a problem correctly parsing the clips, or the wrong files were selected. Click Home and navigate to the settings page. Double-check that your naming conventions are correctly set.
Note that the shot id that you select from the sample submission filename must match your subcaps. For example, if your file names are "doom_101_013_0004_v001.mov" but your subcaps are only "101_013_0004" (i.e., does not include "doom_"), then only select what appears in the subcaps.
Additionally, confirm that your Avid bin export contains the four required columns: Name, Start, End, and Source File columns.
Why aren't my clips relinking in Avid?
If clips in the imported EDL are not relinking, double-check your relink settings with those on the workflow page. It's usually something simple like a box that needs to be either checked or unchecked.
There's also a bug in older versions of Media Composer where imported EDLs only capture the first 32 characters of the Source File name, despite the complete name appearing in the original EDL. If your Source Files are longer than 32 characters, Avid won't be able to relink those clips due to this software limitation.
